GENERAL MYTH
The most common myths that keep excellent managers from
excelling in project management:
Myth: Project Management is Time Management & Cost
management only
Reality: Project Management covers 9 management areas:
Scope Management, Time Management, Cost Management, Quality
Management, Risk Management, Procurement Management, Human
Resource Management, Communication Management and Integration
Management. Hence, it is not Time & Cost management only.
Myth: Construction Management is entirely different from
Project Management
Reality: Construction Management is a highly specialized
application of Project Management and hence, it can be considered
as a subset of Project Management focusing primarily on
construction related activities.
Myth: Project Management is mainly used in Software
Engineering Projects
Reality: Project Management is a professional practice
for executing any project in any discipline successfully
creating
a win-win situation for all stakeholders. Most typical
applications of Project Management practices are:
a) Construction – Buildings, Roads, Bridges, Plants, Dams,
Flyovers, etc.
b) IT/Software Engineering
c) Ship Building (Typically involves more than 30,000
activities)
d) Air-Craft Assembly
Myth: Project Management starts after starting the
execution of projects
Reality: Project Management starts right from the Project
Concept Stage itself & good projects would typically consume
40-60% of the project time in Project Initiation & Planning
itself. The 5 process areas of professional Project Management
are:
a) Initiation
b) Planning
c) Execution
d) Measurement & Control
e) Closing
Myth: Project Management is supply of Human Resources
Reality: Though Human Resource Management is one of the
areas of Project Management, supply of human resources certainly
is not part of professional Project Management. There is a
difference between managing human resources (which includes
recruitment) and supplying human resources.
Myth: Project Management is ERP
Reality: Though Project Management in itself is a highly
specialized & effective usage of Software Engineering &
Technology; it is very different from an Enterprise Resource
Planning Software which typically focuses on integration &
optimal utilization of organizational resources.
